riff moved in with tony, whose family was reluctant about it at first until they saw how worried their son was, they slept in the same room for years

riff is the one who is more flirty, he's smoother with his words than tony

riff also told tony that his last name ( wyzek ) reminded him of 'wiseass' so that's his nickname for him

"y'know, tony.." riff spoke up, breaking the light veil of silence that hung over the two boys as he blew out a puff of smoke. his usual smirk plastered on his face. "your last name, it reminds of something." now this intrigued tony. what connection could riff make with tony's very polish last name to the english language. "yeah and? spit it out riff, i aint got all day" the pair did have all day or else they wouldn't be here, in some random ass alleyway smoking. riff was two things, witty and impulsive. "reminds me of the word wiseass. anton wiseass sounds pretty nice doesn't it?" tony only scoffed and rolled his eyes, how did riff think of these things? this was the same guy who skipped class to go smoke ad copied off of tony. "sure does, buddy boy."

tony doesn't let anybody else call him that.

Riff headcanon

Riff probably had long hair once (ahem..mike-) when he was younger. But one day he saw Tony with a girl that had short hair and they were going out at that time. Riff was sad of course so he went back home to cut his hair and kept it short since then. OR maybe Tony mentioned he liked short-haired girls in the past so the next day Riff appears with short hair. Either way, this is just Riff wanting to be loved lol

Dallas Winston & Baby John Theory

ok so I've always loved the theory that Dally used to be a Jet from West Side Story before he was in the Curtis gang. It makes a tonne of sense right? WSS takes place a few years before The Outsiders and Dally canonically comes from New York and only came to Tulsa because he got caught up in a murder wrap and wanted to escape. So it makes a lot of sense! 

But I just saw someone's headcanons that Dally was the "Johnny" of the Jets.

BUT THEN I REMEMBER THAT IN WSS THE JETS HAVE BABY JOHN WHO IS THE BABY OF THE GANG. HES ONLY 14 AT THE TIME OF WSS AND HE GETS CAUGHT UP IN THE MURDERS OF RIFF, TONY, AND BERNARDO!!! 

So it could be a massive stretch ok BUT what if baby john was Dally. What if Baby John ran away from New York after everything happened, leaving his his shitty dad behind and jumped the first West Bound train he could. It carried him to Tulsa. He changed his name. He toughened up. He stopped being a pussy.

ok now for his name:

in the musical, after Dally dies, Ponyboy mentions that when he picked up Dally's t-shirt from the side of the tracks, he could still smell the cigarettes Dally always liked to smoke: Winstons. 

Baby John jumped on that train holding nothing but a pack of Winstons cigarettes and a Switchblade. He saw the name "Dallas" on a sign at the train station, the train he had been on was stopping in Dallas, Texas after Oklahoma, When Darrel Curtis asked him his name for the first time he looked around and chose the first two words he saw, which happened to be “Dallas Winston" and thats who he stayed for 3 years before he died. Thats the name he was buried under.

which movie adaptation of west side story do you prefer?

YESSS someone is finally talking to me about WSS this is awesome!!!

Now I know they both have their strengths and weaknesses but personally I'm partial to the 2021 version. You may think this is just because of the trans representation, and you... would not be wrong. I loved 1961 Anybodys and you bet I headcanoned them as trans, but I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of seeing 2021 Anybodys for the first time. I loved everything about him, and I want that jacket so bad.

That plus the clearer queercoding on Riff, they really let this musical reach more of its queer potential in 2021, and im a sucker for that stuff. I also absolutely adore "Gee Officer Krupkee" and i just really love how they did it in the 2021 version. That said, 2021 Tony kinda butchered my absolute beloved "Somethings Coming." Also of course the original is a little more insensitive, casting white ppl to play Puerto Ricans, etc. It kinda irks me to watch.

I also just love how bright and colorful the 2021 version is, but the 1961 version has this awesome gritty look to it that i really like too. Plus it actually being filmed in pretty much the time and place it was set is awesome, it has a much better 60s vibe, probably because it was the 60s.

So yeah, I loved the 1961 version but I got kind of obsessed with the 2021 version. Last year I had to write an extended essay on anything I wanted and I just wrote like 20 pages about how 2021 Anybodys contributes to queer storytelling.

families

riff’s real name is rolf wilhelm lautmann. he never uses it. the only ones who know it are riff and his parents. he’s the only child of helene and wilhelm lautmann. helene had a difficult time during her pregnancy and giving birth to him nearly killed her. both helene and wilhelm hate riff for nearly killing his mother. wilhelm is physically and emotionally abusive. riff has scars on his torso and waist from his father’s belt, but his most noticeable scar is the one just under his left eye. he broke a vase when he was eight and wilhelm hit him hard enough that he fell into the broken vase. his parents refused to take him to the hospital, so riff was forced to take care of the wound himself. neither helene nor wilhelm are faithful to each other, but neither of them have ever brought anyone home. helene is drunk or high more often than she’s sober, and she constantly berates riff for being a disappointment. wilhelm also tends to be drunk more often than he’s sober.

balkan’s real name is bernard gordon edwards. he is the third and youngest child in the edwards family. his parents, james thomas edwards i and genevieve evelyn edwards (née peterson), are incredibly rich. his siblings, francesca jacqueline edwards and james thomas edwards ii, both loathe him simply because their parents do. balkan wasn’t a planned child, nor was he really wanted. james and genevieve only wanted two children, but balkan was born two years after james and four years after francesca. he met tony and riff when he was fifteen, but he never hung out with them very much until his parents kicked him out. they didn’t want any of their children associating with ruffians and hooligans, and since they’d never wanted balkan in the first place, it was an easy decision to make. balkan was kicked out on his seventeenth birthday and he’s been running with the jets ever since.

tony’s real name is anton wyzek, but everybody just calls him tony. he is elzbieta wyzek’s only child. she got pregnant out of wedlock at eighteen years old and her parents disowned her. tony’s father, casimir bachurski, left her when she got disowned. she never mentions him and she probably never will. tony loves his mother immensely and he refuses to hear a bad word against her. elzbieta works three jobs to keep her and tony (and later, riff) fed and clothed and in a house. she is incredibly proud of her son and tony is equally proud of her, although sometimes he wishes she’d like his friends more. when he goes to jail, he writes to his mother every day. he never receives a response. he’s told that she passed away a month after his arrest. the months after tony returns home are tough, but he keeps his head down and takes the job that valentina offers him.

the jets

the jets were formed when tony and riff were fourteen. it was tony’s idea and riff went along with it because he always went along with tony’s ideas. and it wasn’t a bad idea, either. the gang was small at first, but it eventually grew to include fifteen boys (and eventually, their girlfriends) that would defend each other until their dying breath. the jets’ territory is the docks and the surrounding area that tony and riff fight on during cool. when tony goes to jail, riff steps up as leader. he appoints ice and action as his second and third. there aren’t a lot of rules in the jets, but the biggest two are no hurting women and no hurting children. it doesn’t matter who they are, if one of the jets hurts a girl or a kid, they’re in trouble.

miscellaneous

riff ran away when he was twelve. he was planning to go to the train station to get away from new york, but he had to hide from the police. he hid in the dumpster outside the apartment building the wyzeks lived in, and tony found him when he took the trash out. when tony asked riff what his name was, he misheard “rolf lautmann” as “riff lorton.” riff didn’t bother correcting him, and he’s been riff lorton ever since.

riff’s favorite brand of cigarettes are whichever’s the cheapest. tony likes camels and balkan likes chesterfield. riff doesn’t smoke too much because the smell reminds him of his parents, but he’s trying to get over that.

riff has three tattoos. one is the word “happy” on his left shoulder that he got because tony dared him to get a tattoo when they were sixteen. the second is the silhouette of a plane on his right shoulder (all the jets have this tattoo somewhere on their upper body. tony’s is on his left shoulder and balkan’s is on his right forearm) and the third is a bouquet of hydrangeas and roses that he got for graziella. he wanted to get it colored in, but it was too expensive.

riff’s bracelet was a sixteenth birthday gift from tony’s mother. he hasn’t taken it off since he got it.

in his modern verse, tony grows up to be a doctor.

riff doesn’t like thunderstorms.

riff can speak german fluently. his parents would only speak german around the house and he learned english from tony and his mother. he knows some conversational polish, but he doesn’t know enough to consider himself fluent in it. he doesn’t speak german much (he hates the language and his heritage) but he still knows how to speak it, much to his dismay.

riff doesn’t like the smell of spray paint.

riff stopped going to school when he was fourteen. mrs wyzek kept trying to make him go, but he kept skipping, so she gave up. he didn’t like school very much, because he couldn’t sit still enough for the teachers and he doesn’t like being told what to do by people that aren’t his friends.

riff’s parents would often demand that he do things (take out the trash, clean his room, etc) immediately, and riff never would, so he’d get punished for it. it was a vicious cycle and riff absolutely hates getting told what to do because of it.

riff, balkan and tony all get fidgety when they’re nervous. riff plays with his bracelet, balkan flips his coin around and tony paces. riff will also fidget with his fingers.

riff didn’t trust elzbieta for years after he moved in with her and tony. she was too nice and he was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. he didn’t understand why she didn’t get mad at him for refusing to take the trash out or clean his room or wash the dishes. he also didn’t understand why she never hit him when he did something wrong. (he knows that hitting kids is wrong, but it had been his normal for so long that he just assumed every parent did it.)

consent is a huge thing for riff, not just with sex related things. he absolutely hates being forced to do things. he needs to have the choice to say no to whatever is happening to him or is being presented to him, and if he doesn’t, he gets angry.

when riff gets angry, he makes himself as big as he can and he gets very loud. it’s what his dad used to do to him, and if riff got scared by it, that means other people will get scared by it. sometimes he’ll shut down if he’s really, incredibly angry. he’ll go quiet and just sort of stare vacantly at the person he’s talking to. tony and balkan tend to get quiet when they get angry.

riff doesn’t like anything that reminds him of his parents. if he gets called rolf, he will freeze up. he doesn’t like the smell of cigarettes or beer (but he’s working on that) and he cannot stand the smell of marijuana. he also doesn’t like sudden movements or sudden loud noises. he’s working on getting used to them, but he will probably flinch if there’s a loud noise or if someone moves too quickly around him. if someone that he doesn’t know goes to touch him, he moves away. he doesn’t like being touched by strangers unless he’s the one doing the touching, because then he can control the interaction.

riff’s cocky jet leader persona is a front that he constructed over the years of him meeting tony and forming the jets. he perfected it when tony went to jail and he always has it up. he doesn’t trust himself to take it down, and it’s less easy to get hurt if no one can get to the real him.

riff doesn’t like seeing blood on his clothes. he’s fine if it’s other people’s blood, but he doesn’t like seeing his own blood on his clothes. if he can wash whatever got blood on it, he will, but otherwise he’s going to throw it away.

when tony gets arrested, riff stops going by mrs wyzek’s place. he stopped living there at fourteen, but he still came by for dinner and to see her. he blames himself for her death. she’d passed in her sleep, but he still thinks if he would’ve been there, he could’ve done something.

riff has lived on the streets for four years (fourteen - eighteen) by the time the events of west side story happen. he sleeps on benches or in alleys. sometimes he’ll crash at valentina’s or mrs wyzek’s, but that’s rare.

riff absolutely hates getting charity from people. his definition of charity is loose, but it boils down to money, food, and a place to sleep. sometimes it also extends to clothes, but he’s very very picky about accepting what he deems to be charity from people. he doesn’t want them pitying him, so most of the time he doesn’t take whatever is they’re offering and he insists he’s fine.

before he went to jail, tony would get loud when he got angry, but after he got out, he went quiet. he doesn’t want to lose control of his temper ever again, and he’s working on making sure he doesn’t and that he knows what to do if or when he does.

balkan is an avid reader and will constantly steal magazines and newspapers from valentina’s store to keep up with the latest news and trends. he’s probably the only jet that actually cares what’s going on in the newspapers and on the news.

riff is a jealous dude.

it's not that he doesn't trust you --- he does, especially if he's daying you for real ---, it's more like he doesn't trust other people around you because, for him, you're everything good in this world, the hope he had lost.

but he still trusts you to tell them to fuck off if they try to make a move.

he's very physical, not only when he's jealous, but when he is you can bet he's gonna have an arm around your waist or directly eat your face out in front of whoever you are.

he's the kind that watches from a corner that interaction he thinks it's shady, narrowing his eyes and with his jaw tightly clenched.

barging into your conversations like that has always get him in trouble with you because you love him but you like your bondaries and the trust, but he swears it's because he loves you.

poor baby is so scared you'll find someone better than him (in his opinion, this is incredibly easy) and leave him.

reassuring is something you had never imagined you would have to do with him, but it's very common for him to end up going mute as you try to tell him there's no one that could steal your attention like he still does everyday.

anyways, going to the point,,,

let's say that your ex isn't part of the jets (not of the sharks, either), and neither are you because that would include a whole shit ass explanation of why you ended up with riff --- you just did, alright? :D

okay so let's say you're going on about your day in the jet part of the neighborhood, running some errands, knowing that riff is watching you from the corner of the street where he's at with his boys.

you've grown very fond of his attention, little gestures like those --- he watches over you from the place he's at, so he doesn't overwhelm you contantly with his bubbly persona but showing he still cares.

and uh-oh, now you're facing your ex.

things didn't end up great between you two, although it wasn't too bad either. still, you would've liked to run away from that situation, but before you can turn around and act like you haven't seen them before they lay eyes on you, they wave their hand at you and you're doomed to make some small talk with them.

your ex has always been a very charismatic and friendly person, which leads into you two talking probably more than what you've expected.

and riff noticed this from his place in the street.

he's able to wait for ten solid minutes before he pats diesel in the shoulder and he starts walking towards you two, unbothered face but a strong glimmer in his eyes.

you know it's him as soon as he rests his calloused hand on your waist, squeezing lightly --- the kind of squeeze he gives when he gets jealous.

the signs of him being jealous are easy to pick on, but you still look up to him when he reaches you, watching amusedly how serious yet cool he looks --- he tries too hard, you'd notice even with a blindfold.

"hey, buddy boy."

that's the cue for you to put your hand on top of his, to keep him grounded from saying something too harsh.

it makes him relax every time, that touch of security that let's him know he still has that special connection with you he can't describe.

your ex is a nice person and them doesn't notice that riff is jealous, and you're smart enough to instantly introduce riff as your boyfriend.

the thing ends happily, like it usually does.

sometimes, though, riff would go a bit out of leash when the person talking to you is shamelessly flirty to you with him still there.

he has never throw hands because he knows you don't like violence, especially not when it's about you.

but sometimes his snarky remarks annoy you a bit.

you always forgive him, though, because he ends up apologizing sooner or later and you'll always work things out <3

riff first sees you when he stops by at doc’s. you’re working alongside tony and laughing at something he’s saying to you, one hand coming up a little self-consciously to cover your smile

riff melts on the spot

he bothers tony for next few days, trying to convince him to introduce the two of you

tony first says no, he knows you aren’t too comfortable around strangers

but riff manages to wear him down eventually

you’re a little scared when you first talk to him, and you’re really thankful that tony and riff manage to carry the conversation on their own with little input from you

but over time, talking to riff gets a little easier

until the mf starts flirting with you

my god, you get so flustered

riff’s a pretty smooth guy, with lots of confidence, he knows what he’s doing

you’re the exact opposite

the first time riff calls you “girly girl”, you get so flustered, you have to walk away to the staff room

he always keeps himself in check though

yes, he loves making you blush, but he never wants to actually make you uncomfortable, so he stays within his limits

he takes you out on multiple dates, usually in secluded places

originally, he did this so you’d feel better, but he ends up liking it more himself, it’s quality time with you AND he’s the sole receiver of all your attention

this isn’t always the case though

sometimes you insist on going dancing because you know all the jets are

and riff loves it too, but he won’t go without you

so you try and bear with it as much as you can

you’re too shy to dance in the hall with all the people milling about you though, so you encourage riff to dance with grazie and the other girls

and even if he does, he always manages to find his way back to you

will probably drag you out of the hall to dance in the parking lot

the music is muted, he sings along to it as he sways you around before pulling you into a kiss

you melt against him, knees unsteady, thankful for the arm he secures around your waist to keep you standing

riff’s also great at extracting you from social situations you don’t want to be in

all you have to do is tug on his sleeve once, and he’ll offer the people around you a pleasant smile and believable excuse before whisking you away

he’s usually the one to initiate physical touch, but on the rare occasions that you do?? fucking dead

just imagine, dragging him down by the collar of his shirt to kiss you?? out of absolutely nowhere?

he always makes the most surprised gasp, too

it fuels your ego, gives you the very necessary confidence boost that you need

riff kind of tends to keep the jets away from you, they’re a really loud and often rude gang

he knows you don’t need to be a part of a crowd like that, so the only jets you properly know are riff and tony

all in all, he’s a great boyfriend, and he finds your shyness endearing instead of annoying

it’s just one of the many things he’s loves about you :)

Riff once played guitar to Tony, and ever since then Tony begs for Riff to play it again, but Riff rarely budges

Riff loves to embarrass Tony in front of the Jets despite the fact Tony has much more blackmail on Riff

One day Riff brought a stray dog he found home, and Tony said he didn’t want the dog in the house. The next day, the dog and Tony are best friends

Tony and Riff always slept together in the beginning days of the Jets, not in a couple way, but just as best friends

Riff hates being in love with Tony because he feels comfortable enough around Tony to actually let his walls down and that scares him

When Riff and Tony get married, Riff puts his ring on a necklace to be able to hide it better

When Riff wants to open up, both Riff and Tony go into a room and turn off the lights, both of them are blindfolded as well. Riff then opens up to Tony, and he only does this with the lights off and both of them are blindfolded. its the fact they can’t see each other that makes Riff feel comfortable to open up to Tony

Riff stays up until midnight every night to kiss Tony on the lips as his way of saying “I’m here today”

Love to slow dance at night in open fields

Tony is an overworked wine aunt and the one to always bail Riff out of jail

They get matching tattoos because they can’t get married legally

All the Jets know about Tony and Riff’s relationship(duh), and they offered to help them get married in secret

Riff loves to get Tony flowers whenever he can and he hand delivers them to Tony while he’s working

When Riff proposes, he does so with a ring his father gave him. Once Riff gets a ring of his own, he puts it in a necklace so people didn’t get suspicious that both him and Tony have a ring

Often slow dance together at night

Can u do a headcannon with riff ?

yes!! mike faist was so perfect for the role, made him more likeable than the original

- riff doesn’t know how to tie his shoes

- he’s the type to do finger guns in the mirror before going out

- he’s terrified of pigeons, it was quite the conversation with Tony

- “wtf? Are you okay?”

- “it’s the pigeons, man.”

- “it’s the what.”

- “THE GODDAMN PIGEONS, TONY.”

- he can’t tell time without counting on his fingers

- very good climber, he used to just scale buildings and trees just to say “fvck you” to the world

- he’s so bad with children. like absolutely awful it’s beyond comprehension. he’ll call them little bastards to their face
